| Box in old patina copper, with compartments featuring six domed hearts that converge towards the central screw hasp. Each compartment has a lid with a hinge and is decorated with festoon foliage, and a little knob set at the end which curves outside. The central hasp has chisel work decoration. When unscrewed, it enables to open the compartments. According to Britannica Encyclopedia, betel quids are
exotic stimulants chewed by 10% of the world’s population, mainly
in South Asia and the Pacific. It is not the areca nut which is chewed
but a combination of betel leaves, areca nuts, spices and lime. This explains
the box’s several compartments. |
