Exceptional box in wood, used to keep betel leaves and areca nuts. The box is very heavy, it comes from Burma (Karen ethnic, Pauwng group) Important traces of green monochrome are still visible on the box, no doubt this object is very old and dates from before 1910. As it joined the collection in 1928, we could say, CIRCA 1900.

The box has a turtle shape, which, in the Môn Khmer region represents the Mount Meru, central line in the milk sea and 6th Vishniu ovation. The lid and the carapace of the turtle are sculpted in heavy wood. The open box shows three compartments carved into the body of the animal. One has a round shape and is for the leaves, the two others are for the areca nuts, spices and lime.
